The REAL "Bring the Song" Challenge

If you're not part of the Ukulele Underground forum or have totally avoided ukulele videos on Youtube, you don't know what the "Bring the Song" challenge is. But let's assume you do, or you at least checked out the link in this paragraph.

There must be over 300 songs written for GrumpyCoyoteTunes' challenge - and it started in February 2009! If I did my math correctly (and I probably didn't), this translates to almost 2 songs written every day since February 1. And there are many gems in this collection as well as some clunkers. I hope I've written at least one of the former and I KNOW I've written a few of the latter.

But the new challenge is - how are we going to choose 12 or so songs to include on the "Bring the Song" CD? By the end of the challenge on January 31, there will over 400 songs to pick from (half of them written by Deach). Voting for them individually would be asking too much of, well, everybody.

I think a possible solution is to have the songwriters pick their top 3 favorites of their songs. Then to put the voting on the UCB and UU web sites. But Grumpy may already have thought of a good idea on how to do this.

Grumps?

The two big issues are voting, and recording. I'll takle recording oin aother post, but as for voting -- what I really need is some help with a website. I need to be able to link to a you tube vid, and have a voting system underneath each video. Then we put that site up for 60 days or so and have at it. That should give us 12 Krabbers songs - no problem.

So sixty days? Are there really 400 songs? Or are there more? So everyone that is voting would listen to 8 songs a day, everyday, for sixty consecutive days....and vote...?

..Let me know if I'm on the final CD...oh wait...I still have to write my 12 songs...I'll start now.

I'm going to review my past entries and eventually pull the ones I'm least happy with. That way, the ones I'm proud of will have a better chance to make the CD.

Why don't you tell everyone to submit one or two songs that they are most proud of and go from there. or fea.

2 words, box set.

2 words, ball sauce.

2 more words, boo zelle .

300+ songs - average about 3 minutes a pop...

Ok - good point, right around 15 hours of music. Hrrm.

This may be a "submit two" thing. Hmmm.

I still need help with the website for voting.

maybe you can email B&H and see how they set up the voting for their contest. that was a pretty neat system.

May I suggest WordPress as basic system for the website and a WP plugin named "wp-polls"?!

Then there should be a way to import all submitted song links from YouTube to the website. Any programmers around? (Sorry, I just write software manuals, I don't code.)

I suggest we do the voting month-wise. So we'll only have to select the best song for each month and in the end there will be 12 winner songs.

And what about next year??? There should be a BRING THE SONG Challenge each year!! I LOVE IT!!!

I thought the B&H voting system was crap. Crap, crap, crap. Giving all the countries 1 video through the first round - many of which sucked - forced some really good videos from Japan and USA out. Yes, I'm taking it personally. :P

seemed pretty fair to me. perhaps the winning video actually deserved to win? let it go alan.

I've been wondering about this myself.

If we vote per month, we'll end up with 12 Krabbers songs, as Grumpy said.

How many people are participating? I agree that letting everyone pick their top 2 or 3 they've written, then vote from there would be a great idea... but how many vids would that be? Grump what if we all picked 2 or 3 then you chose 1 from that then everyone votes?

What about a couple cds- with different themes? An acoustic/soft one & a rockin one? Or girls vs boys or something? There are just too many good entries.

I demand a "Stinkers" CD so that I have a chance! It can be like that first month of American Idol.

It comforts me that you bitches are here thinking the big thoughts. Thats a hugeimongus number of entries.

i joined UU too late to get into this comp, but it seems to me that 400 songs is too many for anyone to listen to in a short space of time. So maybe a 2 song limit per entrant is a good idea, i also like the by month idea, but maybe with the proviso that no one can have more than one/two songs on the finished article? whatever, i will look forward to taking part in the voting and you can sign me up for a copy already.

(oh i am grammy on UU /graycrom on you tube btw)
